There is a similarly named species in Europe, Asia and Africa, the purple swamphen, " Porphyrio porphyrio ", but that bird is much larger.
One such case is the eastern swamphen ( " Porphyrio porphyrio " ), which gives conspicuous visual tail flicks ( see also aposematism, handicap principle and stotting ).
The "'western swamphen "'( " Porphyrio porphyrio " ) is a " swamp hen " in the chicken-sized bird, with its large feet, bright plumage and red bill and frontal shield is easily recognisable in its native range.
The invisible rail is superficially similar to the purple swamphen, " Porphyrio porphyrio ", which has recently been found in Halmahera, but that species is larger, with a short, thick red bill and a red forehead shield; it also has purple underparts and a white undertail.
